Sustainable Office Management

Web and android app to minimize energy waste by automatically regulating central air conditioning, using IoT and room sensors (humidity, light, temp.).

Overview

Borda Technology is a healthcare solutions company, utilizing new engineering, IoT, and addressing complex user experience problems. They work with healthcare institutions worldwide and provide tech-solutions.

In Q3 2023, our team developed the Verdora App to enhance office sustainability by minimizing energy waste through IoT and room sensors (humidity, light, temperature).

As the Product Designer, I collaborated with software engineers, hardware engineers, testers, and product managers to create a user-friendly app that reduces energy waste and promotes sustainable practices in modern offices.

Problem Statement

How can we make traditional offices more sustainable?

Modern offices are significant contributors to environmental degradation due to their high resource consumption and energy waste.

Verdora App aims to address this by offering solutions that enhance energy efficiency and promote sustainable practices, aligning with the global shift towards environmental responsibility to benefit both businesses and the planet.

Literature Review

The rise of technology has transformed office environments into digital hubs, significantly boosting energy consumption with negative environmental and economic impacts. Research shows that office buildings majorly contribute to urban energy use, driven by lighting, heating, cooling, and electronics (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2018).

Apps designed for green office initiatives can offer detailed energy consumption reports to guide both decision-makers and employees.

User Research

‍The results were in despair. No one in the office cared about sustainability or environment. While this was disheartening, it is a valuable insight since it probably represents a not-so-small portion of the global population. I began to ideate and decided it's best if we can find a way to frame waste-minimizing goals using a financial language and gamify in-office sustainability.

Questions

Me and the team conducted a survey (17 persons). Here are some questions from the survey. I usually don't prefer conducting surveys, I opt for interviews, however some employees were working remotely from different cities, so we did what we had to do.

How would you describe your overall experience in the office environment in terms of sustainability and green initiatives?

Would you consider your office sustainable? (Likert scale)

Can you describe the most recent incident you remember threatening the overall sustainability and green status of your office?

What are your expectations associated to recycling?

Are there any specific green or sustainable features or practices you wish to see in your office one day?

Are there any specific areas within the office environment where you believe more attention should be given to sustainability efforts?

User Personas

I created different user personas based on UXR findings.

App Architecture

After the UXR and field analysis (going around observing people), we found these 3 main solution-able areas: Electricity waste via lights, Electricity waste via Aircon, and Waste management.

I wanted to ensure the user experience we're creating was meaningful and inducing knowledge about waste management, which is often disregarded in Turkey. We implemented a trash sorting feature, even though citizens and companies are not formally required to sort their trash.
