Creative Networking Platform

Web and app platform to ease the portfolio management, networking and film crew management.

Overview

Werc is a New York based start-up aiming to improve the recruitment of creative professionals. The platform also provides a built-in function that extracts people's data from long Google Sheets and presents it with clarity.

Tha aim was to redesign the old product and improve features. I was responsible for the design, and testing of the product with another designer.

We collaborated to define the style of the product and deliver the full design. I worked on strategic feature design, UX/UI design, and design system development.

Problem Statements

How can we create a platform for creatives to network with ease?

It's hard to network the-traditional-way for creatives. Most platforms like LinkedIn doesn't even support portfolio showcasing.

Additionally, creative sectors, like film, often include hundreds of people whom you might have worked together but do not know because those Google Sheets are not designed for human eyes.

In terms of style, the MVP1 they had was out-of-style, too cubic, and a poor ux example.

It's hard to network the-traditional-way for creatives. Most platforms like LinkedIn doesn't even support portfolio showcasing.

Additionally, creative projects, like film, often nclude hundreds of people whom you might have worked together but do not know because those Google Sheets are not designed for human eyes.

Problem Identification

No visual hierarchy, creates a claustrophobic experience with too much text without visually hinting the user about the different information presented on the page
No icons used, not very accessible and is not using dual-coding theory to it's max extent
As a creative professional, I find the design very limiting. If I'm a designer, I shouldn't be presenting my portfolio in this layout. It almost feels like I'm searching for a gig on Craigslist! (a huge devaluation of my work) + It's not a page I'd be willing to send during outbound callings.
This web design is developer-centric, it's easy to code it but it'll perform poorly once published online because it's out of style and doesn't apply usability heuristics well.

What I did:

Established a clear visual hierarchy and effective use of whitespace, enhancing content readability and organization.
Integrated relevant icons and ensured proper color contrast, significantly improving accessibility and comprehension.
Developed a modern layout with high-quality project visuals and interactive elements for video content, effectively showcasing professional work.
Ensured a responsive, user-friendly design that optimized page load times and adhered to contemporary usability standards. Page load time is important because of the heaviness of content in portfolios.

Strategic feature design

Most of the materials in this section was already generated when I started working on the project. I'll include them to present a cohesive case study.

This user journey map evaluates the user journey for a producer who needs to hire for cameraman in the next 24 hours.

Based on this journey, we made sure the product was creating a seamless user experience on all frames. Guiding the user to reach their goal in very limited time with minimal dead-ends.

Findings

The current networking platforms do not meet the needs of creative professionals and creative sector.

There is no specific efficient and fast tool for showing video materials as part of a portfolio. Most people package all the links and materials into a pdf portfolio.

Filming sector is extremely inefficient with time when dealing with long lists of crew.

Creatives enjoy socializing a lot, however, it's so hard to connect with people even when you work on the same set.

Solution Design

Here are the frames designed by me and another product designer considering the user insights.

The redesign established a clear visual hierarchy and effectively used whitespace to enhance content readability and organization. Relevant icons were integrated, and proper color contrast was ensured, significantly improving accessibility and comprehension. A modern layout was developed, featuring high-quality project visuals and interactive video elements to effectively showcase professional work.

The design was made responsive and user-friendly, with optimized page load times to accommodate the heavy content typical in portfolios, ensuring adherence to contemporary usability standards.
